Did you know?? Creativity is innate and makes us uniquely human.

Other creatures may be bigger or ‘badder’, but only people imagine possibilities—and make them happen.
— The Science of Creativity

Time Magazine published a special edition issue titled The Science of Creativity in the summer of 2018. Editor Richard Jerome begins The Science of Creativity by explaining that perhaps, sometimes, the term ‘creative’ can carry a kind of mystical aura—having special power infused with a touch of the divine. And, that some folks may be hesitant to refer to themselves as creative when, in actuality, they are. That creativity is less complicated—something completely innate that makes us uniquely human.

Later in the article, anthropologist Austin Funetes, author of The Creative Spark: How Imagination Made Humans Exceptional further explains how we all have the ability to create. He says, “the essence of creativity is to look at the world around us, see how it is and imagine other possibilities that are not immediate present or not based on our immediate personal experience. Creativity is seeing the possibilities and then trying to make those imagining into material reality.“

Creativity is as much a part of our tool kit as walking on two legs.
— Agustin Fuentes, Anthropologist

Creativity feels good. And it’s good for you too! The Northeast Arts Commune puts a focus on those good feelings while empowering the community through connection and creation. Sometimes it can be intimidating to call yourself an artist or a creative type. We know all people have the ability to create something beautiful and unique. These values and ideals are at the core of The Northeast Arts Commune.

It is also explained that the human need to create is essentially derivative and collaborative in nature.  All creators, even the most celebrated ones draw on the work of others, influenced consciously or not by what’s come before—and what’s happening around them. “That capacity to think together, to imagine possibilities and to hope,” Fuenetes Says, “that’s what got us here.”

We’re here to cultivate a non-intimidating space for local artists and creative types to create and collaborate while building a stronger and more connected community.

More on the importance of social connection.

More on collaboration from the perspective of artists.

More on building community through shared spaces.
